Britney Spears’ “Perfume” Video Debuts
Considering the uptempo pace of “Work B**ch,” the slower ballad “Perfume” seemed like an odd choice as a follow-up single. Yet, the track dropped officially on December 3, and the video made its appearance on December 10.
Much in the tradition of “Criminal” from 2011’s Femme Fatale, “Perfume” goes for that dirty, sultry feel. Only this time, rather than Spears getting it on with then-boyfriend Jason Trawick in the shower, she gets caught in a love triangle that involves a lot of perfume.
When speaking about “Perfume” prior to Britney Jean’s release, Spears described its metaphor, saying: “There’s a beautiful ballad called Perfume and it’s about a girl that knows her boyfriend is cheating on her. She just wants him to smell her perfume so she can mark her territory on him; it’s a really beautiful song.”
It appears that director Joseph Khan, behind “Toxic” and “Womanizer,” stuck specifically with this theme.
But regardless of whether you think “Perfume” is a bland misfire or not, it’s not the low point of Spears’ decade-plus career. Recently, she told The Telegraph that her nadir was Chaotic, the miniseries depicting her and Kevin Federline’s relationship that appeared on UPN.
