"Books From Boxes" Video Review

The minute Maximo Park's new single 'Books From Boxes' kicks into gear, you know you're in for a treat. Simply orchestrated, Lukas Wooller's lovely keyboard antics provide a funky backing tone to the jingling, light guitar that Duncan Lloyd forces to punctuate every sentence Paul Smith sings in his trademark Billingham accent.

If you’re going through an emotional trauma with a woman right now, then perhaps ‘Books From Boxes’ will strike a chord - it’s certainly one of the soppier, more heart-laid-bare moments on Maximo Park’s latest album, Our Earthly Pleasures. A gentle, tuneful ramble, in contrast to the angular assault of previous single ‘Our Velocity’, ‘Books From Boxes’ unveils a maturity about Maximo Park’s current writing: here the drama unfolds slowly and sensitively rather than slapping you across the cheeks.

There's something increasingly lovely about that accent - although often accents can prove a turn off, it certainly worked for the Arctic Monkeys and it definitely works for Maximo Park. It's not too hard, not too soft - it's definitely there, but it doesn't aggravate, rather bringing a sense of realism to the words.

With lyrics that are easy to understand, a gentle yet powerful sound and a sentiment that is similarly applicable to many, in 'Books From Boxes' Maximo Park have produced a brilliant track that really does appeal, and that's a pretty rare find.
