Bono And The Edge Pleased With Spider-Man Show
The Spider-Man musical, written by U2 members Bono and The Edge, last week broke a Broadway record by bringing in almost $3 million in just one week of 9 performances. This puts "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" into the category of becoming the highest single week grossing show of all time. This record was previously held by "Wicked" which only last year (about this time) grossed over $2.2 million in box office takings for the week. This now makes it the highest money-earner in Broadway history.
"What a fantastic bit of news to kick off 2012," commented U2 band members Bono and the Edge on the production's history-making box office record. "It just goes to show that you can't keep a good superhero down."
"Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" has also set another record of being the most expensive musical in history, with figures reported to be around $75 million for the cost of the production. With these sorts of budgets and cost blow-outs, experts believe that the show will have to run for at least five years to start recouping costs.
Numerous problems have plagued the production. In the early stages, some cast members suffered serious injuries after falls during the show, the show has experienced financial problems, and the production has been the subject of some scathing reviews. At one point the show closed down after Julie Taymor, the original director (and author of the book on which the musical is based), was replaced. A new director was found who revamped the show with a re-opening merely three weeks later.
Although critics have shown a mixed reaction to the revised show, everyone agrees on the stunning visual effects. The video-preview shown below is brilliant.
All the music and lyrics were written by Bono and The Edge.
