Bon Iver's Justin Vernon Records Album With Rapper Astronautalis
Bon Iver's Justin Vernon is staying quite busy since his Grammy wins. Between tour dates and his appearances on The Ellen Degeneres Show and Austin City Limits, the Wisconsin crooner found time to make an album with bandmate S. Carey, Gayngs' Ryan Olson, and Minneapolis rapper Astronautalis.
Yes, you read that right: rapper Astronautalis.
According to an interview with the rapper, AKA Andy Bothwell, in City Pages, the group recorded at Vernon's April Base studio near Eau Claire, Wisconsin, during "a whiskey-fueled weekend" to "record an album unlike anything these collaborators have previously created." During the recording session, the group created eight pieces of music, which Astronautalis freestyled over for eight hours.
According to the rapper, "the end product will only sound like a hip-hop record to a certain degree," but the group is "hell-bent on getting [the album] out really quickly."
You can check out some photos taken during the session on Astronautalis' Tumblr. And leave your expectations at the door, says the rapper. "It's such a far stretch for a lot of us musically. I think everyone should abandon their expectations of what it's going to be, because it's probably going to be very far off."
