"Bluhtsturm Erotika" Video Review
As a general rule, black/death metal bands aren’t usually worth listening to. Their failure to choose what side of the extreme metal fence to fall on is coupled with their inability to please fans of either persuasion… never mind both. Yet Austrian stalwarts Belphegor are an exception to said rule, menacingly combining the speedy shreds required to appease death metal loyalists and the satanic atmospherics that black metal diehards desire too.
As a by-product of this successful formula (this is the Austrian’s sixth studio album) Belphegor instantly hold the harnesses to a diverse and bloodthirsty beast. On the one taloned-hand there are the blitzkrieg blasts of “Belphegor – Hell’s Ambassador” and “Chants for the Devil” and on the other there are Cradle of Filth-style black metal outings such as the worryingly catchy “Bluhtsturm Erotika”. It certainly helps to mix things up a little.
Despite this, it’s hard not to feel that there’s something missing from “Pestapokalypse VI” that would have made it essential listening. Technically the album is brilliant – the musicianship is tight and hellishly executed, and Andy Classen’s production is as powerful as you’d imagine from a man that has recently worked on Krisiun, Sinister and Callenish Circle records. Even the artwork by Seth Siro Anton (Vader amongst others) is spot on. However a lack of truly stand-out material leaves this a tombstone short of a full graveyard, which is a dying shame because as far as black/death metal goes this is one of the (sub)genres more consistent efforts.
