Billy Ray Cyrus and Buck 22 Make “Achy Breaky Heart” Sequel: “Achy Breaky 2”
Avicii already gave us a serviceable EDM-country hybrid with “Wake Me Up,” but a fusion of country and hip-hop? While Florida Georgia Line did this with rapper Nelly last year, Buck 22’s re-interpretation of Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart,” now called “Achy Breaky 2,” doesn’t work as well.
The alien-themed music video kind of sums up its bizarre character. The song’s really a Buck 22 track, with Cyrus phoning it in with the studio version and then during the music video. About how this pile of badness occurred, the rapper, who’s Dionne Warwick’s son, told Rolling Stone: "I asked [Billy Ray Cyrus] if he would mind if I could take a crack at remaking 'Achy Breaky Heart' and he looked at me for a moment, and said 'lots of people have tried already, but go for it.' He didn't have a clue that I had already gone into the lab and cooked up a demo of what I thought would be a fun EDM/hip-hop styled version, which at the time only had a sample from the original of his voice. He liked what he heard and, weeks later, arrived at the session to record this track."
If you can remember, “Achy Breaky Heart” was a huge hit in 1992, earning the country star a spot in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. His album, Some Gave All, didn’t do too badly, either.
While Cyrus shifted primarily to acting over the past decade, likely because of Hannah Montana’s success, he continues to release music. The last was 2012’s Change My Mind, on Blue Cadillac Music. The album reached No. 38 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
