Beyonce’s Publicist Defends Star over Gaddafi Gig
Since playing a private gig for the family of the Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi, Beyonce has come under much criticism. The music world and political world often become entangled with one another, and it is not always on the lyric sheet where this occurs.
The 2009 New Years Eve private gig is believed to have netted the star around $2 million for her performance.
Yvette Noel-Schure, Beyonces publicist stated when speaking to the associated press: "Once it became known that the third party promoter was linked to the [Gaddafi] family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause. The fee was put toward humanitarian efforts in Haiti."
This obviously raises the question on whether or not Beyonce and her management team new that the gig was organised by the Gaddafi family. Even if it Beyonce did not know, it is unlikely her skilled management team would not have known, and therefore it is highly probably they proceeded to arrange the gig regardless of the Libyan links.
Nelly Furtado has also come under fire for playing a gig to the family and declared that she was giving her fee to charity. This put Beyonce under renewed pressure and no doubt this prompted the statement from her publicist.
US State Department documents show that Beyonce and Nelly Furtardo are not the only stars to have played for the Libyan dictators family. Mariah Carey, Timbaland, and rap star 50 Cent have also performed at concerts organised by Muammar, Colonel Gaddafis son.
