Beach Boys Announce 50th Anniversary Tour
Rumors about a Beach Boys’ reunion tour and album have circulated for months. But the group’s remaining members announced an official 50-date tour at the end of last week. Brian Wilson, Michael Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks will be touring together, starting with the New Orleans Jazz Fest at the end of April.
Regarding the tour, Brian Wilson said in a statement: "This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys. It will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again."
Marks echoed this sentiment in a similar statement, saying: "I'm really looking forward to celebrating this important milestone in the Beach Boys' history with the other guys, and with Capitol Records – where it all began 50 years ago. It means a lot to me that we can all reunite and pay tribute to the fans who have kept the music alive.”
The Beach Boys were expected to make an official announcement at the Grammy nominations special on November 20, but the group backed out at the last minute. They will, however, be performing at the Grammy’s broadcast on February 12. About playing at the Grammy’s, Jardine told Rolling Stone: "There will be a surprise at the Grammys. We'll do something really exciting. There's a lot of interest in it, which is nice. It's going to be a very big operation. […] The fans are going to want to hear the hits. But there should also be lesser-known ones that are so important."
Earlier this year, the group re-recorded their 1968 song “Do It Again” for a new album. Additional recording sessions are scheduled for this month. When an album was in talks in July, only Wilson and Love had written new material. Jardine explained about the new material: “There are some new things that Brian has come up with that are really remarkable. 'Do It Again' was done in an afternoon. These songs will take a little more putting our heads together."
