Austra 'Spellwork' Music Video
Canadian electronic band, Austra, has just released a music video for "Spellwork", a track off their debut album Feel It Break. Released in May last year, the album was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize (2011),but lost out to Grammy Award Winning group Arcade Fire with the album The Suburbs. Numerous sources however have given positive comments to the Feel It Break album; New York Magazine named it the best album of 2011, and the disk has also featured in many acclaimed reviews in the UK.
The music video for "Spellwork" takes the viewer into the woods on a bright sunny day where young ladies dressed in either long bright red gowns or long white dresses walk around purposely as if participating in some sort of ritual. A man dressed in a suit and top hat, and appearing to be part of some religious sect, is escorted into the area by two young ladies dressed in black.
The whole time, the beat of the drum has a "definite" presence about it, as if something important is about to happen. Yet the tune of the music has an eerie tone about it. The scene is set for something mysterious to happen.
As the tension builds up, scenes show the young ladies whispering to each other. What are they saying? Another young lady arrives, dressed in black with a black head scarf, riding on a black horse - the blackest, black horse you will ever see. She rides around the woods as if stirring up some mysterious forces.
Further actions occur, leaving the viewer with many unanswered questions ... Why? What? How?
One word that comes to mind in describing this video is "mysterious". The ending leaves all the unanswered questions, unanswered.
Did they just go down to the woods to have a feast of fruit?
The music behind the video is very interesting - commanding with its powerful beat.
