Aretha Franklin Added to American Idol Speculation
There has been so much speculation about who the producers are considering for the judges’ panel for the upcoming 11th season of American Idol after the departures of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler (and, possibly, Randy Jackson) so it’s actually a little different to hear someone voicing their own interest in being added to the roster.
Aretha Franklin’s songs have been performed to death by contestants year after year on the reality singing competition so why shouldn’t she be allowed to finally give some commentary?
In an email response to the question about whether the Queen of Soul would be interested in being on American Idol, she wrote: "Yes I am interested as a judge!"
With 18 Grammy Awards, hits like “Respect” and “Chain of Fools” as well as being able to claim the honor of being the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there is no denying that Franklin has a lot to offer.
At 70 years of age, though, she might be just the opposite of what the producers are looking for right now. Ratings show that Idol is losing that key younger demographic and an older judge might make them lose even more interest. Still, it can’t just be a panel of young artists if they are hoping to continue to have credibility.
It will be interesting to see who ends up taking those empty seats.
