Amy Winehouse's Father Reflects on Anniversary of Her Death
Unbelievably, an entire year has passed since Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home and to commemorate the somber occasion, her father, Mitch, has reflected on the things that have happened since then, including the creation of a foundation created in her honor.
"Even after a small space in time -- we're talking a year since Amy passed away -- we are beginning, well, Amy is beginning, to have a positive effect on a lot of disadvantaged young people's lives," Mitch Winehouse said.
When discussing how he plans to pay tribute to his daughter on this sad day, he explained that he plans to say a Jewish prayer at her home and close friends will gather at Jazz After Dark, one of the singer’s favorite jazz bars. "There are going to be lots of tears and lots of laughter and that is exactly how Amy would have wanted it," he said.
The Amy Winehouse Foundation is now operational in both the United Kingdom and the United States. So far, more than $1 million has been raised in the UK for various charities while the American chapter is working to help feed needy children in Louisiana and develop after school programs with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.
When asked about his book, Amy, My Daughter, Mitch had some surprising things to say: "I don't feel any accomplishment or any joy. The reality is I shouldn't have had to written the book in the first place. I wrote it fairly quickly after Amy passed away. I found writing it quite cathartic and I thought it would help me in my recovery, and to a certain extent it has but reading the book back for edits was very difficult indeed; more difficult than writing the book."
He also hints at the possibility of more music from Amy: "We're working with (music producers) Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson to see what they've got. But we have to be mindful; we don't want to put anything out that could be damaging. It wouldn't be right for Amy's fans."
Rest in peace, Amy Winehouse.
