Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba Releasing Solo Record
Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba has had a busy year. Over the past 12 months, the group put out acoustic release Damnesia and then, under name theHell, released an EP. Now Skiba is preparing for the release of his first solo album. Through his group Matt Skiba and the Sekrets, the album, titled Babylon, is part of a multi-release contract with Superball Music. Joining him are Jarrod Alexander (touring drummer for My Chemical Romance), AFI bassist Hunter Burgan, and Murder City Devils’ Leslie Hardy on keyboards, and Cameron Webb is producing.
In speaking with Billboard, Skiba mentioned Babylon uses an earlier solo recording, titled Demos, as a template but is far more polished. Additionally, he approached his record alone – a different process from his band’s usual strategy. He told Billboard: "It was fun to just say, 'This is the idea, this is the way I envision it and hear it, and this is the way we're gonna do it.’ Had I brought these same exact songs to the table as an Alkaline Trio record, it would sound nothing like this. It's me singing and there's similar guitar tones -- you can tell that it's me; that I can't change -- but I really did enjoy the freedom of making it."
On the other hand, Skiba did not completely distance himself from the Alkaline Trio. To the magazine, he admitted he continued to reference occult imagery in his lyrics, and the sound is not drastically different. He admitted: "There's a little bit of Alkaline Trio in all of it, in a sense. It wasn't on purpose, but at the same time I'm not gonna try and do something different. To me, that's dishonest."
Fans waiting for another Alkaline Trio won’t have to wait long. In his interview with Billboard, Skiba revealed the group is putting out a new record in the fall.
