Akon Makes a Return With New OG Boo Dirt Collaboration
Akon has been somewhat quiet since 2009, after putting out a few singles from his last album Freedom. Although a few non-album tracks have dropped since then, none blew up the radio, so it appears that the singer once known for “Smack That” is now making a comeback.
This week, he officially started it with a track called “Nasa,” a futuristic-sounding collaboration with OG Boo Dirt and featuring Young Thug. We’ll have to see how it does on the charts, but right now, critics’ main complaint is, Akon just phones in his brief appearance.
The track is part of DJ Smallz Two In The Chamber mixtape, which comes out on July 4.
Akon racked up a series of hits in the 2000s, starting with 2004’s “Locked Up.” Other major tracks included “Lonely” and “Smack That.” His last album, 2008’s Freedom, reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and generated successful singles “Right Now (Na Na Na),” which ended up in the Top 10, and “Beautiful,” which cracked the top 20.
An album called Stadium has been in the works, but so far, the only track to be released has been “So Blue,” which only charted in Australia at the end of last year.
