Aerosmith Bassist Tom Hamilton Reveals New Album is Scheduled for Spring 2012
Earlier in September, we mentioned that Aerosmith was back in the studio working on a new album – their first of original material since 2001’s Just Push Play. Bassist Tom Hamilton revealed more details in the weeks since then in a series of videos, giving a general idea of when the album should appear and what it may sound like.
In the latest video, Hamilton stated the album will hit stores in 2012 and, presently, the band is putting together parts recorded over the last few months. He said: “Next spring, baby. That’s what we want. I know you’ve been waiting a long time; we’ve been waiting. We’re excited. A lot of people that we know and trust who have come and heard what we’re working on think we’re doing something really cool. So I hope you’ll think the same thing.”
Then he later added: “We’re taking all the bits of pieces that we recorded for the last two and a half months and assembling it, so we can then go and put more guitars on, and more vocals and whatever else we think. I know I have a couple of little things to do before I’m done, but I’m mostly finished and I’m looking forward to the whole thing being put together and the vocals going on.”
Around the middle of the month, Hamilton provided a more detailed account about the recording process, the sound of the album, and touring: "We're finished with the basic tracks. We've cut 13 basics and we're gonna sit with that for the moment. The bass parts are done, subject to some adjustments in the future. The drum tracks are all done, and we're starting to do guitar overdubs. It's fun. I enjoy going down to the studio and hanging out with the other guys while Joe [Perry] and Brad [Whitford] do their work. So that's probably what we're gonna be doing for the rest of September. And then we're gonna start rehearsing and getting ready for the tour in South America and Japan, which will take us to the end of December. And then sometime between now and then, Steven's [Tyler] probably gonna start singing some vocals and then get really intense about it when we get back from Japan. We can see and hear the album in our minds; we can kind of tell what's going on. And I like to describe it as being crunchy on the outside with a creamy center."
Joe Douglas, who produced Get Your Wings, Toys in the Attic, and Rocks with the band in the 1970s, confirmed a few of these points. He stated: "The new album should be out around May 2012. I know that's a long wait, but after the South American tour and Japan in October, November and December, we will just get back to work on it in mid-January. […] For those who are asking, this album will be raw, nasty, tough rock with a good deal of the old Aerosmith 'tongue in cheek.'"
